Merton College

Founded in 1264, Merton is one of the oldest colleges in Oxford and, with its medieval buildings, one of the most beautiful. The College admits around 90 undergraduate and 90 graduate students each year, and has a strong sense of community and a friendly atmosphere.

Merton’s 750th anniversary campaign, "Sustaining Excellence", seeks to raise £30 million to maintain the College’s position as an institution of academic excellence. Donations to the Annual Fund enable us to support key projects including student support, preserving and safeguarding the tutorial system, financing individual fellowships, and protecting and resourcing our historic buildings.

Donations to any of the below areas will have a tangible impact on Merton’s students and enable the College to continue to excel.

Unrestricted gifts will be directed to the area of greatest priority, whether within or beyond the scope of our other funds.

The Student Support Fund assists present and future students in a number of ways. With rising tuition fees and living costs, students can find themselves in financial difficulty. The Student Support Fund provides assistance for these students, as well as enabling others to continue and complete their studies by offering special academic and welfare support, and providing graduate scholarships. It also plays an important role in the College’s strategy to maintain a high quality of academic, sporting and cultural life, which is open to all outstanding students, whatever their background or means.

The preservation of the Tutorial System is one of Merton’s highest priorities. However, it is expensive to maintain. We are seeking donations to help us build our endowment and enable us to continue to attract and retain the best tutors and academics. Donations can be directed to one of the specific Fellowships listed below, or made to the general Tutorial Support Fund.

Our graduate students are a vital part of Merton’s present and future, engaging in innovative research in areas from medicine, science and mathematics through to the humanities and social sciences. A gift towards graduate talent will help Merton to increase the number of graduate scholarships available, ensuring that we continue to attract the brightest and best students from the UK and overseas.

A gift to Enhancing the Student Environment will help preserve our architectural legacy and help maintain and build more energy-efficient living and learning facilities, enabling the College to respond to the growing needs of our academic community.
