Hertford College

Chartered in 1740, Hertford is known for its friendly welcoming atmosphere. The College offers a progressive climate and aims to foster good, positive working relationships between tutors and students. It was one of the first colleges to become co-educational and maintains a higher ratio of women to men than is usual in Oxford.

Gifts will be directed towards Hertford College's area of greatest need.

This fellowship has been established to preserve the strength of history teaching at Hertford, and to recognise the enormous contribution of Drs Geoffrey Ellis and Toby Barnard. When Dr Barnard retires in 2012, neither the College nor the History Faculty can afford to guarantee a replacement. However, under the new Oxford Teaching Fund, the University will guarantee to pay its share of a new appointment in perpetuity, if the College is able to fully endow its share. This means raising a fund of £1.2m, or £960,000 with Gift Aid.

This Fellowship Appeal has been established to reflect the wishes of the College and the Van Noorden family to establish a lasting tribute to the work of Roger Van Noorden. When Roger retired in 2006, the College was only able to appoint a four-year fixed term College-only Fellowship and a stipendiary lecturership. Roger Van Noorden then started fundraising to endow a post to ensure that economics teaching at Hertford could be secured in perpetuity.

To maintain Hertford’s tradition for access to all based on their academic ability, we want to ensure that no students are discouraged from studying at Hertford because of cost. The College offers a bursary of £1,000 per annum; this will be given automatically to any student eligible for bursaries awarded by the University on the basis of means testing.
