Balliol College

Founded between 1263–1268, Balliol is one of the oldest, most centrally situated and most diverse of the Oxford colleges. Balliol has approximately 400 undergraduates and an equal number of graduates.

Balliol prides itself on its friendly atmosphere and diverse community. It has a lively student community drawn from a broad spectrum of schools and colleges, including a considerable number of European and overseas students.

Gifts to the Annual Fund sustain a great variety of areas across the College - from teaching to accommodation and facilities, and from clubs and societies to student support. Money raised each year for the Annual Fund is used for immediate expenditure. From time to time, the Annual Fund can also be used to help strengthen Balliol’s endowment.

The endowment is vital, because it provides an additional source of annual income for the College. Without this income, Balliol would not be able to survive, because it receives such a relatively small proportion of funds from the University. Money raised each year for the Endowment is invested, in such a way as to preserve the long-term value of the capital.

Money is needed to preserve and improve the College’s historic buildings. Particularly pressing is the need for a new kitchen, at a cost of some £3m.
