Giving to the School of Archaeology

The School of Archaeology organises various aspects of archaeology at Oxford, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Classical, European and World archaeology. It also oversees activities at Archaeological Units within the University: the Institute of Archaeology, the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art and the Donald Baden-Powell Quaternary Research Centre.

Three specific areas are seeking funding:

Embracing ancient technology, navigation, coastal geomorphology and mythology as well as cultural anthropology and history, Maritime Archaeology merges with social and cultural anthropology in many parts of the world. Oxford already has expertise and ongoing research in maritime themes in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific. We are seeking support for a post devoted to maritime archaeology, which would be a catalyst for much new research and a focus for creative development.
Landscapes consist of physical characteristics, but also have cultural meaning and often act as the glue that connects people with their physical world. These so-called Cultural Landscapes consist of visible features such as settlements, field systems, burial and sacred places, and of places only known through myths, legends and stories. Landscape studies has the potential to be a rich and vibrant area of multi-disciplinary research.
The major drive in human development over time has been procuring food. The surviving evidence of what happened in the past, and how it shaped our complex behaviour, is a central study of archaeology. This makes food an especially interesting study, since it registers environmental constraints, while simultaneously demonstrating human ingenuity, preferences and codes. In addition, historical information can be compared to evidence from present-day communities to study changes and effects.
