Over 300,000 people in the UK alone are legally blind or severely visually impaired – but three-quarters retain the ability to perceive some visual information. Oxford’s Dr Stephen Hicks and a small team of scientists are working to develop an affordable gadget which will use the technology found in smartphones and games consoles to augment the sight that remains.

Resembling a pair of glasses, the device requires no surgery and is designed to be manufactured at low cost. Cameras and a GPS unit gather information about the surroundings and display it as a simple, clear pattern of lights on the lenses. With this navigational aid, we hope the visually impaired will be able to explore new environments freely.
