Rothermere American Institute

The Rothermere American Institute is an international centre of excellence dedicated to the interdisciplinary and comparative study of the United States. Since its opening by President Bill Clinton in 2001, the Institute has provided a home in Oxford for students and scholars of American history, politics and culture.

Every year, the Institute hosts more than 100 seminars, workshops, conferences and lectures which attract leading scholars, students, policy-makers and public figures from around the world to debate and study the United States.

The Vere Harmsworth Library, housed within the Institute, has the finest academic collections in American history, politics and government outside the US.

The RAI achieves all it does through the generosity of individual benefactors, trusts, and foundations who share the Institute’s commitment to world-class research on the United States. Further financial support is essential to ensuring that the RAI maintains the quality and scale of its activities and increases its academic and global public impact.

This will allow future generations of scholars, students and members of the public to better understand the United States, its politics, its culture and its history. To realise its long-term potential, the Institute has four principal funding priorities:

Donations would help attract to the post a person of proven academic or other professional distinction and international standing, who would bring exceptional qualities of leadership, clarity of mind, diplomatic skill and entrepreneurial energy.
Endowing a seminar series, international conferences, or an outreach programme promoting greater public understanding of the United States would help ensure that RAI research and events engage an ever wider audience.
Donations would help augment the RAI’s commitment to doctoral research. The Institute’s support for fresh research on the United States is especially vital as government funded provision for graduate work in the humanities declines.
Donations towards these research posts will support world-class study, teaching and collaborative research at the Institute.
