Giving to the Beazley Archive, Classical Art Research Centre
Since the university’s acquisition of Sir John Beazley’s archive in the mid 1960s and its transfer to the university in 1970, a world class resource has been created. Over nearly forty years the Beazley Archive has given expert knowledge about the art of ancient Greece and Rome free of charge for the public benefit. Its website receives more than 250,000 hits per day from universities and schools, museums and galleries, offices and homes. Its broad remit of classical art in antiquity and its Collection and Reception since antiquity encompasses cultural history and history of art in addition to Classics and Archaeology. Groundbreaking use of ITC since 1979 has resulted in dynamic collaboration with BT, FranceTelecom, IBM, Nokia and others in the 1990s and with world leaders in dataweb developments and computer vision within the university since 2006.
